Move from leading dives to teaching them with the PADI Instructor Development Course in Cairns, the main access point for the Great Barrier Reef. Candidates rehearse teaching presentations in heated pools ashore, then refine open-water teaching on liveaboard trips to the outer reef around Flynn, Milln and Thetford Reefs before sitting the independent Instructor Examination. You finish the IDC ready to certify your own students and join the PADI professional community.
The PADI IDC trains and assesses you against PADI standards and prepares you for the Instructor Examination, which a PADI Examiner conducts independently. On passing the IE you become a teaching member of PADI with a renewable instructor certification, access to professional insurance and the global PADI jobs network.
Confined-water workshops use heated pools in Cairns. Open-water teaching practice happens on liveaboard trips to outer Great Barrier Reef sites such as Flynn, Milln and Thetford Reefs, where calm-to-moderate conditions and the June-to-November high season make a forgiving place to learn to teach. The independent Instructor Examination is conducted separately by a PADI Examiner at a designated IE location.
