The ocean's apex predator. Pods hunt cooperatively, and in Norway, they herd herring while divers snorkel above.
Orcas (killer whales) are the largest dolphins, apex marine predators with matriarchal pod structure, highly developed echolocation, and culture passed across generations. Different populations specialise in different prey: salmon-eaters, marine-mammal hunters, fish-corralling herring specialists.
In-water encounters are rare and tightly regulated. Norway's Tysfjord/Skjervøy waters in winter (Oct–Jan) offer the world's most reliable encounter, snorkellers join pods hunting herring schools. New Zealand and Baja Mexico have summer charter encounters with specific pods.
Indo-Pacific encounters are opportunistic, Sri Lanka whale-watch tours occasionally encounter Indian Ocean orcas. The bucket-list encounter remains Norway.
