The most accessible large WWII wreck in the world: a walk-in shore dive on Tulamben beach, Bali.
USAT Liberty was a US Army Transport torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-166 in January 1942. The crew beached her at Tulamben, Bali, where she sat onshore until Mount Agung's 1963 eruption slipped her into the sea.
She is the most accessible large WWII wreck in the world, a true shore dive. Entry is across a black-pebble beach. Depth 5–30 m, broken into sections on her starboard side. Bumphead parrotfish, garden eels, huge schools of jacks and occasional reef sharks. Snorkellers see the shallowest sections from the surface.
Open Water cert is enough; even Discover Scuba runs the shallow sections. Most divers do her three times (sunrise, day, dusk) to catch the bumpheads at dawn and the macro at night. Bali year-round, peak May–Oct.
