Pre-dawn cleaning rituals at Monad Shoal, one of the only reliable thresher encounters in the world.
Pelagic thresher sharks spend their lives in deep open water. The main reason recreational divers ever see them is Monad Shoal, a seamount near Malapascua in the Philippines, where they rise to cleaning stations at roughly 20–30 metres every dawn. (Since 2022 some of the action has also shifted to nearby Kimud Shoal, and local operators know where the sharks are currently most reliable.)
It's one of the few reliable thresher encounters in the world. Boats leave at 4am, you're in the water by sunrise, and the sharks pass within metres, sometimes for 30 seconds, sometimes for the whole dive. Their upper tail lobe is at least half their body length and is used to stun fish (peer-reviewed; Oliver et al. 2013).
Best months are Dec–May (calmer seas), but threshers appear year-round. Requires Advanced certification (depth) and good buoyancy (don't crowd the cleaning station). Fuvahmulah in the Maldives also now offers reliable thresher sightings if you can't reach the Philippines.
