About ocean sunfish

Ocean sunfish are the strangest big animal you'll dive with: round, flat, up to 3 metres tall and over 1000kg. They live in deep open ocean and spend most of their time below 200m, surfacing only to thermo-regulate or visit reef cleaning stations.

For divers there's really one destination: Nusa Penida and Crystal Bay in Bali. From Jul–Oct cold currents push molas up to 20–30m where bannerfish clean their skin. The water is genuinely cold (18–22°C), so bring a 5mm wetsuit.

They're shy and skittish, and bubbles spook them. Approach slowly, stay deep below them, and never reach. A patient 60-min dive at Crystal Bay during peak season has 60–70% sighting probability.
