Tiger sharks are second only to great whites in apex-predator reputation, but their reef behaviour is calm and curious. They have striped flanks (fading with age), broad heads, and grow to 5 metres (occasionally larger). Encounters are rare in our destinations but increasing as populations recover.
Best encounters are at Tiger Beach (Bahamas) or Aliwal Shoal (South Africa). In our region, the most reliable tiger shark dive site is Fuvahmulah in the southern Maldives, with daily encounters year-round and specialist operators. Always dive tiger sites with a briefed local team.
They're individually identifiable from fin markings, and operators in serious tiger destinations know each shark by name and behaviour.
