Anemone partners. The Finding Nemo fish, fiercely territorial in real life.
Clownfish live in symbiosis with sea anemones, protected by the anemone's stinging tentacles while providing nutrients via faeces and food scraps. Each anemone hosts a family group: one dominant female, one breeding male, and several smaller non-breeding males. If the female dies, the breeding male changes sex to replace her.
They're fiercely territorial, small fish that will dart at divers, photographers and other clownfish that approach. A 30cm anemone with three clownfish defending it is one of the easiest reef-photo subjects available.
False clown (orange), pink, saddleback and tomato are among the species across the Indo-Pacific. Andaman, Bali, Maldives, Komodo and Sipadan all have several species.
