Lionfish are the showy royalty of Indo-Pacific reefs: feathery pectoral fins, striped bodies, and 18 venomous spines (13 dorsal, 3 anal, 2 pelvic). The sting is intensely painful but not lethal to healthy humans; avoid contact and they're harmless to observe.
In their native Indo-Pacific range they're stable. In the Caribbean they're an invasive species crashing reef-fish populations. If you're diving the Caribbean, lionfish hunting is encouraged; in Indo-Pacific waters, observe only.
They hover in caves and overhangs by day, and hunt small fish by dusk. Common across all SE Asia destinations: Andaman, Maldives, Bali, Red Sea, Komodo.
