Course overview

Learn to dive with the current rather than against it through the SSI Drift Diving specialty in Raja Ampat, where strong tidal flows are the reason its reefs teem with life. On drift sites such as Cape Kri, Sardine Reef and Blue Magic you learn the techniques to ride currents safely and with full control. This SSI dive course is one of the most relevant scuba diving specialties for the region.

What you’ll learn

• Plan and conduct drift dives in moving water
• Use reef hooks and current technique safely
• Stay with your buddy and group in current
• Manage buoyancy and trim while drifting
• Use surface signalling and pickup procedures
• Read tidal timing to choose the right window

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 10 and up
• SSI Open Water Diver or equivalent certification
• Comfortable buoyancy control
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Drift theory and first dive

   Cover current planning and reef-hook use, then make a guided drift dive on a site like Cape Kri.
2. Day2
   Second drift dive and certification

   Refine technique on a stronger drift such as Sardine Reef and complete the specialty.
