Course overview

Step up from guiding to teaching with the SSI Open Water Instructor programme on Kadmat Island. The protected lagoon along this Lakshadweep atoll is a calm, controlled classroom for rehearsing teaching presentations, and the ocean-side reef slopes give open-water training in 24-metre visibility. You finish ready for the SSI Instructor Evaluation and the authority to certify your own students.

What you’ll learn

• Deliver academic, pool and open-water teaching presentations the SSI way
• Apply the SSI training system and total-diving philosophy
• Demonstrate and evaluate student skills to professional standard
• Manage risk and run training sessions to dive-centre standards
• Brief, supervise and debrief student divers effectively
• Prepare fully for the SSI Instructor Evaluation

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• SSI Dive Guide or Divemaster, or equivalent leadership rating from another agency
• Certified diver for at least 6 months
• Logged dives meeting SSI professional requirements (typically 75 or more)
• Current first aid and CPR / oxygen-provider training
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Teaching foundations

   Introduction to the SSI training system and your first academic teaching presentations.
2. Day3
   Pool teaching workshops

   Practise demonstrating and teaching skills in the calm shallows of the Kadmat lagoon.
3. Day6
   Open-water teaching

   Deliver open-water teaching presentations on the atoll's reef slopes under certifier evaluation.
4. Day9
   Standards & dive business

   Cover SSI standards, risk management and the commercial side of teaching.
5. Day12
   Science & skills assessment

   Sit the dive-science exams and complete the practical skills assessments.
6. Day14
   Evaluation prep

   Mock evaluations and a full briefing for the SSI Instructor Evaluation.
