Course overview

Move from leading dives to teaching them and qualify as a SSI Open Water Instructor in north-male-atoll. The atoll's calm lagoons and sheltered house reefs sit a short transfer from Malé, giving instructor candidates a controlled environment to rehearse teaching presentations and learn the standards before the final examination. You finish ready to certify divers of your own.

What you’ll learn

• Deliver knowledge-development, confined-water and open-water teaching presentations
• Apply the agency system of education and dive standards
• Evaluate, demonstrate and correct student diving skills
• Manage diver risk and run sessions to dive-centre standards
• Brief, supervise and debrief students confidently
• Prepare fully for the independent instructor examination

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• SSI Divemaster (Dive Guide) or a qualifying leadership rating
• Certified diver for at least 6 months
• 100 logged dives to sit the instructor examination
• React Right Instructor rating (can be completed alongside)
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Teaching foundations

   Orientation to the agency system of education, followed by your first classroom knowledge-development presentations.
2. Day2
   Confined-water workshops

   Practise demonstrating and teaching core skills in the calm lagoons of the atoll.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Deliver open-water teaching presentations and skill circuits on the house reefs under evaluation.
4. Day4
   Standards & risk management

   Work through dive standards, risk management and the business of diving.
5. Day5
   Theory & rescue assessment

   Sit dive-theory exams and complete the rescue assessment to course standard.
6. Day6
   Exam preparation

   Mock exams, presentation polishing and a full briefing for the independent instructor examination.
