Course overview

Step up from guiding to teaching with the SSI Open Water Instructor programme in Papua New Guinea, based around the seamount-studded reefs of Kimbe Bay. Training in warm, sheltered water that holds more than half the world's coral species, candidates build and rehearse their teaching presentations before the SSI Instructor Evaluation. You finish authorised to certify SSI divers across the entry-level and continuing-education range.

• Teach SSI academic, pool and open-water training sessions
• Apply the SSI Total Diving System and digital learning tools in the classroom
• Demonstrate and evaluate diver skills to SSI instructor standard
• Manage student risk and supervise training on Kimbe Bay reefs
• Plan, brief and debrief teaching dives professionally
• Prepare for the SSI Instructor Evaluation

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• SSI Divemaster or equivalent leadership rating from another recognised agency
• Certified diver with relevant continuing-education experience
• Logged dives meeting SSI professional requirements (commonly around 100)
• Current first aid and CPR / SSI React Right provider rating
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   SSI teaching system

   Orientation to the SSI Total Diving System and your first academic teaching presentations.
2. Day2
   Pool teaching workshops

   Demonstrate and teach core skills in the sheltered shallows around Kimbe Bay's islands.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Run open-water teaching circuits on bay reefs under Instructor Trainer evaluation.
4. Day4
   Standards & dive business

   Work through SSI standards, risk management and the business of teaching diving.
5. Day5
   Theory & rescue assessment

   Complete the science-of-diving exams and rescue assessment to instructor standard.
6. Day6
   Evaluation preparation

   Mock presentations and a full briefing ahead of the SSI Instructor Evaluation.
