Apex billfish of the open ocean. 4.5 metres, electric-blue flanks, almost never visits coral reefs.
Blue marlin are the largest billfish in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, females reach 4.5 metres and over 800 kg, dwarfing the males. The 'bill' is fused upper-jaw bone used for slashing prey schools, not spearing. They're warm-blooded around eye and brain for sharp depth-of-field vision while hunting.
Almost no recreational dive encounters, they're pelagic, fast, and have no reason to visit reefs. The very rare exceptions: blue water dives off Kona (Hawaii), occasional bait-ball encounters from Red Sea liveaboards, and offshore charters in Mauritius.
Most divers see blue marlin in transit photos from sportfishing boats. The aspirational dive bucket: charters that drop divers in known feeding zones, Kona, Madeira, Bahamas.
