The most mysterious wreck in Indian waters, its origin still disputed.
The Chidiyatapu Wreck lies at the southern tip of South Andaman near Port Blair. Its identity is disputed: local lore points either to Sophie Marie (1942) or to a Japanese WWII warship Amagi Maru carrying around 600 troops, allegedly torpedoed by the British. The origin remains unconfirmed.
The dive sits at around 30 m. Schools of snappers, trevally, stingrays, humphead wrasse, fusiliers, batfish and giant groupers patrol the wreck. The atmosphere is closer to a haunted hull than a coral-bright reef wreck, and visibility can drop to 8–12 m on bad days.
Advanced Open Water plus Wreck specialty are recommended; the depth and current rule it out for beginners. Run from Port Blair as a half-day boat dive. Best season November to April.
