Ghost pipefish are extraordinary mimics, they drift head-down on the substrate disguised as floating algae, feather stars, or weed fragments. Three commonly encountered species: ornate (matching feather stars), robust (matching weeds), halimeda (matching halimeda algae fronds).
Unlike their seahorse and pipefish relatives where males carry the pregnancy, female ghost pipefish brood eggs in a pelvic pouch formed by modified fins, a reversal of the typical syngnathid pattern. Pair-bonded for the breeding season.
Lembeh, Anilao, Romblon, Bali (Tulamben), Andaman. Finding them requires a sharp-eyed guide and patience, they're cryptic even when you're looking directly at them. Once found, they hover in the same spot for days.
