About grey reef sharks

Grey reef sharks are the most photogenic of the small reef sharks: stockier than blacktips, more confident than whitetips, and reliably present in current-swept channels and seamounts. Maldives channels (Fuvahmulah and central atolls), Red Sea reefs (Brothers, Daedalus) and Komodo's Castle Rock deliver schools of 10–30 during incoming tides.

They have a distinctive threat display: arched back, dropped pectoral fins, exaggerated swimming. It means back off. Most divers never see it because most divers don't crowd them; respectful behaviour produces 60-minute close encounters with no stress on either side.

Listed Endangered globally on the IUCN Red List (2020 reassessment), grey reef populations are recovering in well-managed marine parks. Diving them at protected sites such as Maldives, Palau and Tubbataha is one of the rare cases where dive tourism directly funds their survival.
