Mobula rays, also called devil rays, are smaller cousins of mantas in the same genus (Mobula). 9 recognised species, 1.5–3m wingspans, plankton-feeding strategy identical to mantas. The difference is that mobulas school in 'fevers' of 50–500+ individuals and routinely breach clear of the water in dramatic leaps.
Why they leap is still debated by marine biologists: communication, parasite removal, mating display. In Baja Mexico's Sea of Cortez, fevers of thousands turn the surface white with mobula bellies in spring and autumn migrations.
Our region: Maldives southwest monsoon (Jun–Nov), when mobulas join mantas at planktonic-bloom feeding sites. Red Sea liveaboards see them at the Brothers and Daedalus. Andaman has occasional sightings. Komodo Manta Alley also produces mobula encounters during dry season.
