Fastest fish in the ocean. Hunts sardine bait balls in coordinated teams, and the dorsal sail is the showpiece.
Sailfish are pelagic billfish: long bill, electric-blue iridescent body, and a large dorsal 'sail' they raise during high-speed bursts (up to 110 km/h, the fastest verified fish speed). They're warm-blooded around the eye and brain for sharper vision at depth.
The standout encounter is Isla Mujeres (Mexico), where sailfish work together to herd sardine bait balls to the surface, then take turns striking the school. Snorkellers (not scuba, since bubbles spook them) are dropped in the bait ball for some of the most dramatic underwater encounters anywhere on Earth.
From our region: Red Sea liveaboards occasionally encounter sailfish during open-water transits. Sri Lanka and Mozambique have offshore charter encounters during their respective sardine-run seasons. Dedicated sailfish trips remain a Mexico or Costa Rica affair.
