Snappers are the workhorses of reef diving: present at every tropical destination, schooling in hundreds at reef edges and current-swept points, and providing the silver-flank background that makes every wide-angle reefscape photo come alive. Common species include the yellowtail, bluestripe, blackspot and the red emperor.
They're moderately territorial; schools hover in the same canyon or wall for years, so dive guides know where to take you on the first dive of a trip. Drift over a current point at slack tide and you'll often pass through dense walls of snapper.
Reliable at every FF destination: Maldives channels, Andaman walls (Johnny's Gorge, Dixon's Pinnacle), Bali (USAT Liberty), Komodo current dives. Their density correlates with reef health, and abundant snapper means an unfished site.
