Sponges are the most ancient animal lineage, over 600 million years old, predating jellyfish and corals. They filter water for plankton through millions of tiny pores, processing up to 10,000 litres per day for a large barrel sponge.
Common Indo-Pacific forms: giant barrel sponges (Xestospongia testudinaria), some over a metre across and centuries old; tube sponges in pink, blue or yellow; encrusting sponges that paint coral surfaces in vivid colour patches.
They host whole micro-ecosystems, gobies, shrimp, hawkfish all live inside sponges. Andaman, Maldives, Bali, Red Sea, every reef. The barrel sponges of the Caribbean and Red Sea are the photo icons; tube sponges are reliable macro subjects.
