Sweetlips

Sweetlips are mid-size reef fish named for their large fleshy lips and patient hovering behaviour. They spend daylight stacked motionless under coral ledges or in caves, sometimes 20–30 individuals to a single overhang. Common species: harlequin (yellow with black spots), oriental (yellow with black stripes), giant sweetlips.

Juveniles mimic toxic flatworms, swimming with an exaggerated wobble to convince predators they're inedible. Adults shift to schooling patience by day, then disperse at dusk to hunt small crustaceans across the sand.

Reliable across our destinations: Maldives walls, Andaman (Johnny's Gorge), Komodo, Sipadan, Phuket and Bali. Their stacking habit makes them one of the most patient subjects for reef photography; they barely move when you approach respectfully.
