Silver giants with prehistoric biology. Schools of 100+ patrol Caribbean wrecks and reef channels.
Tarpon are evolutionary throwbacks, fish that can gulp air at the surface using a primitive lung-like swim bladder. The Atlantic species reaches 2.5 metres; the Indo-Pacific tarpon is smaller but still impressive. Their massive silver scales reflect light dramatically and made them famous in game fishing.
Best encounters: Caribbean wrecks and reef channels (Cuba's Jardines, Cayman walls, Bonaire bays). In our region, the Indo-Pacific tarpon (Megalops cyprinoides) appears in Andaman mangrove channels and Sri Lanka coastal lagoons, smaller but accessible.
Schools of 50–200 patrol shallow channels, accept divers calmly, and provide some of the easiest wide-angle silver-fish photography in scuba. Dawn dives produce the densest schooling.
