Course overview

The SSI Open Water Instructor programme on the west coast of Mauritius takes you from dive leader to dive educator. Training from Flic-en-Flac, you rehearse academic, pool and open-water teaching modules in the sheltered lagoon and on calm reef sites such as Aquarium before completing the SSI Instructor Training Course and Instructor Evaluation. You graduate certified to teach SSI students across the entire recreational pathway.

What you’ll learn

• Present SSI academic sessions using the digital learning platform
• Teach and evaluate confined-water and open-water skills to SSI standards
• Demonstrate scuba skills to instructor-level clarity
• Manage student safety, briefings and risk in open water
• Apply SSI standards, procedures and the Total Diving System
• Complete the SSI Instructor Training Course and Instructor Evaluation

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18
• SSI Dive Guide / Divemaster or equivalent leadership rating from a recognised agency
• Certified diver for at least 6 months
• Logged dive count meeting SSI professional requirements (typically 75+)
• Current React Right or equivalent first-aid and CPR training
• Diver medical clearance signed by a physician

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   ITC foundations

   Orientation to SSI standards and the Total Diving System, plus your first academic presentations.
2. Day2
   Pool teaching

   Practise teaching and evaluating confined-water skills in the calm Flic-en-Flac lagoon.
3. Day3
   Open-water teaching

   Lead open-water teaching circuits at sheltered reef sites such as Aquarium.
4. Day4
   Standards and business

   Work through SSI standards, dive-business and risk-management modules.
5. Day5
   Theory and skills assessment

   Complete dive-theory exams and instructor-level skill demonstrations.
6. Day6
   Instructor Evaluation

   Final teaching evaluations and the SSI Instructor Evaluation to certify you to teach.
