Course overview

The SSI Navigation specialty in Muscat builds the compass and natural-navigation skills to explore Oman's reefs independently at Bandar Khayran and the Daymaniyat Islands. Using SSI's digital theory and in-water practice, you learn to set headings, follow patterns and return reliably to your start point. You finish as a certified SSI Navigation diver.

What you’ll learn

• Use a compass for reciprocal and square-pattern navigation
• Read natural references like reef lines, sand ripples and depth
• Estimate distances using kick cycles and time
• Relocate a chosen underwater point
• Combine compass and natural navigation on a planned route
• Lead a dive and bring the team back accurately

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 10
• SSI Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
• Basic buoyancy comfort
• Medical statement and physician sign-off where indicated

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Day1
   Digital theory & compass dives

   Complete SSI navigation modules and practise compass headings and natural references on a Bandar Khayran reef.
2. Day2
   Patterns & certification

   Run square patterns and point relocation on a Daymaniyat dive, then certify as a Navigation diver.
